What is Roller Derby?
Roller Derby is an electrifying, full-contact sport played on roller skates. Known for its speed, strategy, and adrenaline-fueled action, the sport is as much about teamwork and endurance as it is about agility and skill. It’s played on an oval track with two teams of skaters competing to score points by outmanoeuvring their opponents.
THE BASICS
- Each team has five players on the track at a time:
• One jammer: The point scorer, identified by a star on their helmet.
• Four blockers: Defensive players who try to prevent the opposing jammer from passing.
- The objective is simple: The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The blockers aim to stop the opposing jammer while helping their jammer get through.
- A match consists of multiple rounds called “jams,” lasting up to two minutes each. It’s a fast-paced, high-stakes game requiring tactics, speed, and strength.
